Thailand’s Luxury Marine Lifestyle
The growing interest in marina and resort properties across Southeast Asia region is being reflected in the booths and displays at boat shows across the region this year.

International boat shows have already taken place in Thailand’s resort capitals of Pattaya and Phuket in recent months, and both events showcased some of the world’s top sailing vessels, while also aiming to highlight the special attraction of a luxury marine lifestyle to visitors from around the world.

Mixed use resort and marina projects in Thailand increasingly offer investors and boat owners a combination of marine and land based lifestyle choices, with Phuket and Koh Samui becoming popular destinations for visitors with their own private yacht.

“Phuket’s marinas are expanding to match increased demand from ever larger vessels,” said Andy Dowden, Exhibition Director for the Phuket Boat Show. “More people are discovering Asia as a cruising destination and this has a positive effect on property markets as more luxury boat owners base themselves in this part of the world instead of in the more traditional cruising areas like the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.”

Although Koh Samui has yet to offer marine visitors a full service marina, the island’s many protected bays allow boats to moor close to the shore and onshore facilities and services are increasingly sophisticated. This means larger vessels can use the island as a base to explore the Gulf of Thailand.

“Sail a mere 7 nautical miles north from Samui and you reach another stunning tropical Island, Koh Phangan, while a little further to the north is Koh Tao, considered to the diving Mecca of the Thai Gulf,” said Captain Charlie Dwyer, skipper of the 36 metre (116 ft) sailing yacht Yanneke Too. “Head just 20 nautical miles northwest and you’re at the Angthong National Marine Park with its spectacular group of 42 islands. If you take a around 10 days and you can take in the beauty of Koh Samet and Koh Chang.”

Attractions on the water have also drawn investors to Koh Samui’s beaches and hillsides. The island has become known for its many high-end private villas and wealthy buyers often choose beachside properties where they can moor a boat off the beach and enjoy regular voyages into the glistening waters right in front of their luxury holiday home.
