Medical tourism a hit in Thailand

Over two million international visitors per year now receive medical treatment in Thailand and according to the country's Tourism Authority that number is predicted to continue rising.

The TAT is currently supporting the “Find Your Fabulous” campaign to promote Thailand globally as a destination for medical tourism and part of the campaign will see a number of hospitals in Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui offering discounts on a range of cosmetic procedures.

According to a recent survey conducted by VISA, out of every 13,000 tourists that choose to travel overseas, six percent choose to do so for medical treatments, and Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, is becoming one of the most popular destinations in the world for this type of travel.

Ooi Huey Tyng, country manager for Singapore and Brunei at VISA Worldwide was quoted as saying Thailand and Singapore come out as the top medical destinations in Southeast Asia, claiming over 30% of market share last year. The two countries combined actually attracted 3.1 million foreign patients, with Thailand alone attracting 2.4 million.

The VISA study also shows that Thailand currently ranks ninth among the  top destination in the world for medical tourism. One reason for this being that the cost of treatment in Bangkok is still very reasonable when compared with other countries. Bangkok is actually 25 percent cheaper than Singapore when it comes to medical costs, even though Thailand has established a reputation for its internationally accredited medical facilities.

The hospitals in the Thai Kingdom offer a choice of medical and alternative healing  treatments, all of them in line with global standards, in addition to quality aftercare that integrates traditional and new age practices treatment to ensure the best recovery for the patient. Thailand was the first Asian country to be awarded JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation in 2002, with 28 of its medical facilities now accredited.

A large selection of the Thai capital's best known hospitals are participating in the “Find Your Fabulous” campaign, including Bangkok’s Yanhee Hospital, Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital and the DNA Clinic in Siam Square. The Bangkok Hospital is also participating in the discount campaign on Phuket and Samui.

One of the treatments included in the promotion is an increasingly popular procedure, upper and lower blepharoplasty (eye lift), which is being offered 10% cheaper that usual at Bangkok Hospital Koh Samui for THB25,200 (USD 807) rather than the full price of THB28,000 (USD 897).

Other procedures on offer include fractional skin resurfacing at ProDerma Aesthetics Clinics in Bangkok, which has been reduced in price by 34 percent from US$500 to US$330. Meanwhile, on Phuket, an Ulthera skin lifting and tightening treatment is being offered at the Apex Profound Beauty Clinic at a discount of 28 percent, down from THB120,000 (3,845 USD) to THB86,000 ($2,756 USD).
